Traveling with Your Pet in Europe: A Guide for UK Pet Owners

Ready for a Pawsome Holiday Adventure!

Traveling with your beloved pet can be an exciting experience, but when crossing international borders, especially from the UK to Europe, it’s important to be aware of the requirements and regulations to ensure a stress-free trip. At Vets on Wheels (VOW Vets), we’re here to guide you through the process and provide the necessary services to make your travels as smooth as possible.

Post-Brexit Requirements for Traveling with Pets to Europe

Since the UK left the EU, the process for traveling with pets has changed. Here’s what you’ll need to know:

1. Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

  • Your pet will need an Animal Health Certificate issued by a veterinarian.

  • The certificate is valid for:

    • 10 days for entry into the EU.

    • Up to 4 months for onward travel within the EU or returning to the UK.

  • At VOW Vets, we can issue the AHC for your pet, ensuring all the necessary details are included.

2. Microchipping

  • Your pet must be microchipped. The microchip must be ISO-compliant (15-digit), or you’ll need a compatible scanner.

  • If your pet isn’t already microchipped, we can provide this service during your consultation.

3. Rabies Vaccination

  • A valid rabies vaccination is mandatory. Your pet must be vaccinated at least 21 days before travel.

  • At VOW Vets, we’ll ensure your pet is up-to-date on their rabies vaccination and provide proof for your AHC.

4. Tapeworm Treatment (for Dogs Only)

  • Dogs traveling to certain countries (e.g., Finland, Norway, Ireland, Malta) require tapeworm treatment administered by a vet 1–5 days before arrival.

  • We can administer and record this treatment as part of our pre-travel services.

5. Approved Routes

  • Pets can only travel via approved routes with authorized transport companies. Ensure you book your travel accordingly.
